WOQNI

Band Conditions (B-). Better conditions tonight. Only some white noise. Again I want to thank Chuck, NO6L, as relay for the south. Thanks also to Forrest. KJ7XP for the north.

K6ERI - S.K.

There will be a CW call up on Thursday's net.

It is with a very sad heart that I have to report the death of Jerry DeMoss, K6ERI, our Tuesday night southern relay. Last night about 7:30, Sandy Miller, his daughter, called me and said that Jerry passed on at 6:00 PM, due to a heart attack.

There will be no services as he wanted to be cremated and his ashes scattered somewhere illegally.

It was only last Tuesday, 8-26-08, that he acted as southern relay. We will miss his booming base voice we all loved. He was a gentleman, always calling for Marcia (KE6FKL) and Earl, N6ECE, even if they were not there.

"Let's see if Marcia is here".

Cards may be sent to:

Needless to say, I was a little shook up and it showed at the first of the net. But as the net progressed it came back to its normal insanity. Most expressed surprise and sadness and said a few words about Jerry.

Whats this? did I hear frim Dirty Radio that Earnestine, N6ETP, is going to call Bingo Friday night. WOW.

Band Conditions (C-). Relays tonight were KJ7XP and W7HUT. Thanks Guys. All the check ins tonight complained about the static levels. At the start of the net it was around S-9. By 9 PM up to five over. At 9:30, 10 over and at 10 PM, 20 over at WQ6I's QTH. At net control's QTH, it was about 5-10 over most of the net.

Some sad news. I received an e-mail from Chuck, NO6L that Phil Herndon, W6WAG became a Silent Key Thursday. Services will held on the 3rd at 12:30. As soon as I get more information, will send another e-mail. WE WILL HAVE A CW CALL UP ON SUNDAYS' NET.

This has to stop. We do not want any more. We have lost 3 WARFA members since the 14th of August.

I received a call Thursday about 5 PM from Sandy, daughter of Jerry DeMoss, K6ERI. They took Jerry to the hospital Wednesday. From what she told me, it has to do with diabetes and G.I. problems. He is 82 and legally blind to boot. We hoped to get more information this weekend.

Wish we had some good news!

Band Conditions (C). Thanks to the relays, KJ7XP and K6ERI.

I have got to fix my antenna. Twice my rig has dialed "911", and the police showed up at my door. It could be all the limbs hanging on my long wire or a bad ground somewhere. Its not funny anymore.

We are sorry to report that AD6AM (AM in the PM) Jim Greenwood is a S.K. Jim had not been active in the last few years due to his health, but w did get an e-mail from him 4-5-08. The first time we met was at a retreat where he slept in a tent. He was 50 years old. If you wish, you can send a card to the following address:

Sunday, August 24th

Band conditions C. Thanks to the relay K6LDK and KJ7XP. The band was quite noisy with that white noise again. At times the QRN was S9 and above.

A short note about the memorial service for Jerry, KD6SA. They had put out 400 chairs at the church for the service. Of those chairs there were 80 that were filled with with ham radio operators and their spouses. The service lasted only about one hour with a video that had Jerry singing and his brother playing guitar. When everyone realized that it was Jerry singing there was almost a collective sigh from all who were there.

There were seven speakers who praised Jerry and his accomplishments but to us the best was Gary,N6CZE who made us all laugh at the antics of the Jerry and Gary show.

After the service, lots of people went to Jaimie and Jerry's for a snack-That snack turned out to be a four course dinner, with fried chicken, DESERT and more DESERT, fruit, salad and soda pop. After eating a four course dinner we went back to to Moody's where we ran the net. Dave and Kathy, Ron and Denora, Tony and XYL, Pat and Gary, Billy, Kay and Bill, Ted and Pat spent the rest of the evening, with pizza to boot.

Listen to the WARFA Net for August 17th
This net was dedicated to your comments about Jerry.

Thursday, August 14th

Tonight's net was in memory of Jerry, KD6SA.

Your net control was Bart, WA6HZN, assisted by Jerry, K6ERI, and Forrest, KJ7XP. Jerry and Forrest did a great job.

Band conditions managed to earn a C. Skip was good out to around 600 or 700 miles and some of the thunderstorms were taking the night off.

To Gary, N6CZE: Thank you for all of your hard work in bringing us the latest information about Jerry.

During tonight's net many of you expressed your thoughts about Jerry or related your memories of him.

Several tributes to Jerry have come in over the last few days via e mail and they will be appearing on the web site in the very near future. If you would like to send in your thoughts about Jerry for publication on our website, e mail them to w0qni@juno.com.

In other news, Moody's (WQ6I's) daughter underwent surgery in Seattle, WA on Wednesday the 13th. The operation went well and she is resting comfortably. She says that she feels good.

Ernest, KF6QCX is getting relief from his back pain and Bill, WB6ZJA ("Zebras Jumping Around") is on his way to becoming the bionic man after hip surgery.

Sunday, August 10th

Net control: Bart, WA6HZN
Northern relay: Forrest, KJ7XP -- Southern relay: Mike K6LDK -- with a little help from El Presidente, Earl, N6ECE.
Band conditions: F, improving to D+ by the end of the net. Snap, Crackle, and Pop (the Rice Krispies kids) are in charge of 75 metres and aren't likely to give up control anytime soon. When you add in the fact that we really haven't begun to climb out of the solar minimum, it all sums up to rotten band conditions. I could even hear the static crashes under Moody's powerful signal. Since we have long days, the long skip doesn't come crashing down on us during the net, but the low solar activity is making for weaker than normal signals. Come Fall, we could be in for a roller coaster ride.

Bill was attending the Santa Barbara Hamfest and stopping over in Santa Barbara during last night's net.

Cheemo, if you were there last night and we couldn't hear you, we're sorry.

N E W S: Gary, N6CZE, brought us an interesting report on Jerry. Jerry called Gary and they had a brief conservation. Jerry's contribution was reported to be about 15 words. Jerry still tires easily. Jerry is aware of our concern for him and thanks everybody for caring. Jerry's outlook and condition are about the same as reported in our news item dated August 8th near the top of the WARFA Home Page.

Moody (WQ6I) is on his way to Seattle, WA. His daughter will be undergoing surgery this coming Wednesday (the 13th). Our thoughts and prayers are with Moody and his family during this difficult time.

Mel, WA6HYK checked in with his good news. His sister was suffering from ovarian cancer, but the cancer has gone into complete remission. Mel was delighted and so are all of us, Mel, for you.

Jon, W6JPP reports that treatment for his back pain is working well.

WAY TO GO WARFA.
Well here is the whole story AGAIN.
WARFA and the 6th call area raised enough money to fund 6 out of 10 scholarships being given out this year by OMIK. Two scholarships are being awarded to students from California. They are Alexandra Hill, San Jose, CA and James Coleman of San Diego, CA.

If you have students planning to attend college next year, why not go to the OMIK home page, http://www.omikradio.org/ and download the OMIK Scholarship Application

Band Conditions (C+). Thanks to the relays, K6LDK and KJ7XP. Summer time blues. Static AGAIN. At about 9:20 to 9:40 we called and called for check ins. Then the band changed and we had 20 or so more check ins. STRANGE BAND.

Mike still misses Tippy 2, but he said that she is home and that is a lot of comfort.

Forrest, KJ7XP reports that the service for his mother Almeta Good, will be August 2nd, Saturday, at 1 pm. She was 87. Cards can be sent to the following address:

This net was rated PG-13 and maybe at times "R", but boy did me have fun. It was as Billy said, "Trim your capacitors, lean back and take a deep breath, relax and have fun." Billy's signal was HUGE. 15 over most of the time. We wish that Billy was with us more from Mexico.

Jerry report KD6SA: Jerry is still weak from the chemo he had about a week ago, but he was in a great mood. He was on the phone with Gary, N6CZE at the time of the net.  Band Conditions (C+). We did have the static and noise at the first of the net. For some reason, only the EMF gods know, it went away around 9:00. THANKS to Don, W6KAT and Forrest, KJ7XP for the relays..

WOW... Our check-in numbers (91) were like a winter's net. They just kept coming and coming. I would guess that Don had over 35 check ins. Forrest had some problems so Kevin, KG6UGF, filled in for a while. We shut the net down at 10:20.

PLEASE GO TO OUR WEB PAGE. www.warfa.org and see the start of new things. Remember, we are still rebuilding, but you can see what Bart, WA6HZN is up to.

Michael, W7HUT reported that the GAP fire is now 30% contained. 1,700 homes were evacuated but now some can go back home. There are over 2000 fire fighters on this fire of about 10,000 acres, The Big Sur fire is only 8 percent contained with 1000 fire fighters fighting it. Tonight's net was for Paul, KA6PVR, so we had the CW call for him and then told stories about Paul. What many did not know was Paul was very versatile . He knew so much, but you only found out when you asked. He was witty and had a comic effect on every one. Stories ran from him getting Billy and Bill stoned during the net to his Indian ceremony for SKs. We understand that Norma, N6MMF still has the container used for the ceremony. We know he had Indian blood and he was very proud of this. Sioux, we believe Sioux. Some even remembered him as net control of a 10 meter net, at midnight, some 25 years ago.

WE ARE VERY SORRY TO REPORT THAT PAUL HUSTED, KA6PVR IS A S.K. as of 6-13-08. There wil be a CW call up at the first of the net Sunday, 6-29-08, then we will tell stories about Paul. Paul attended almost every retreat for over 10 years. You may remember him as he had an artifical leg. One year he had little American Flags on it. There will be a memorial celebration for him at the family home on Saturday 6/28/08 at 2pm. He will be missed.

Cards may be sent to the family at:

Lakeview Terrace, Ca. 91324
His son is Michael Husted, KB6VVA. Michael says that Paul's wife is just holding on and he's there with her. He's trying to find that peace pipe that Paul used at our WARFA ceremonies - to use during the memorial.

FYI - Paul started and performed the smoke signals, etc. during memorial celebrations that we used to do at the retreat.

Thanks Moody for the above information.

Band Conditions (C). Again static and some QSB. What was interesting was that almost all northern CA. stations reported lots of SMOKE. More than 800 fires in the state,

Band Conditions (C). I think you would call this the summer dumb-dumbs. Lots of static and just noxious noise. At times well over S-9. Thanks to the relays, Jerry, K6ERI and Forrest, KJ7XP.

Well the Lakers lost, so tonights net was a refuge for Laker fans, As one said, "Wait till next year". A lot showed up before the end of the game as Boston was 30 points ahead.

Gary, N6CZE, reported that Jerry, KD6SA is at home now. He also reminded us that Thursday, Jerry will be 65, HAPPY BIRTHDAY JERRY.

WAY TO GO WARFA. Ted, WG6F area director for OMIK, ("6" land) reported that we raised enough money to fund 2 scholarships for OMIK. (Webmaster's note: If your operating system is pre-XP or Windows 2000, OMIK's site may not display properly.)

Band Conditions (C-). Lots of noise and static. This was the night for the relays, K6LDK, Mike and Forrest, KJ7XP. You might have guessed, but the Lakers finished up winning their game around 9:00. Boy did we have the check-ins after 9:00. We expect the same will happen Tuesday night.

KD6SA is still in the hospital. He is still having problems breathing, and he is still very weak. Hope Gary (CZE) will have good news Tuesday night.

6-10: (via Gary N6CZE) Jerry was released from hospital a day or two after our previous report. He returned to hospital a few days ago when doctors noticed that his temperature was elevated during a routine blood test. Jerry has a mild case of pneumonia and is receving breathing treatments. Gary reports that Jerry is weak, but talkative, making jokes, and in good spirits. He may be returning home within a few days. As of Thursday night (the 12th) he was still in the hospital but they hope to have him home by Father's Day. (WOQNI) NET CAPS
